Light Fades When Taken For Granted
Old poem #5
Her eyes hold pools of compassion
Waters so deep and many-faceted that no one
Has ever seen the bottom
Layers of love and pain
all disguised
Beneath her careful words
She places flowers in her hair
And empathy in her heart
Yet they never understand why
She is the way she is
Some wish to change her
Others think she’s perfect
I believe that she is a star
Neither perfect nor flawed by her own intent
But shaped by the world around her
Her light is so bright that it seems nothing
Could ever bring her down
But even stars fade
When their light is taken for granted
They lose their center
And with it their gravity
The very thing that brings out smiles and laughter
Taken away with callous hands and sharp words
As though kindness
Were an endless well
Rather than a gift
Given again and again

“She places flowers in her hair / and empathy in her heart” - literally gorgeous, no notes!
